What does this ingredient do in an antiperspirant?
It is a multifunctional base ingredient that acts as a solvent, humectant and texture modifier.
Part of a system, not a label in isolation
It should not automatically be classified as either an active ingredient or ‘alcohol’ in the everyday sense. It is chemically a diol, but it does not behave like ethanol.
The CIR considers propylene glycol and the reviewed PPGs safe in cosmetic formulations designed to be non-irritating.
It may cause irritation or a contact reaction in some people, especially on already damaged skin.
Do not confuse it with Alcohol Denat. or treat it as evidence that a formula contains ethyl alcohol.
