What does this ingredient do in an antiperspirant?

In the presence of moisture, it forms superficial gel complexes in the sweat ducts. Their effect is temporary and diminishes as the skin naturally renews itself.

Part of a system, not a label in isolation

It is most often found in long-lasting products designed for overnight use. Concentration, solvent, acidity and the amount applied all matter; the name of the active ingredient alone does not describe the full formula.

Regulatory and scientific context

It is permitted as an antiperspirant active ingredient within regulated concentrations. The current SCCS opinion considers aluminum compounds safe in the cosmetic exposure scenarios and limits assessed; the FDA separately limits aluminum chloride to 15% in aqueous non-aerosol products.

What sensitive skin should consider

It may cause stinging and irritation, especially on damp, damaged or recently shaved skin. Application technique is critical for overnight products.

Do not confuse with

It is not the same as Aluminum Chlorohydrate. Both ingredients reduce sweating, but they are used in different formulas and routines.
