What does this ingredient do in an antiperspirant?
It forms a temporary gel barrier in the superficial portion of the sweat ducts. It is one of the most common active ingredients in daily roll-ons and aerosols.
Part of a system, not a label in isolation
It may be used in water-based, cream or aerosol formulas. Actual skin feel and effectiveness depend on the concentration and the complete formula.
The FDA permits Aluminum Chlorohydrate at concentrations up to 25% as an active ingredient in over-the-counter antiperspirants. In its current assessment, the SCCS considers aluminum compounds safe within the specified exposure scenarios and limits.
It is commonly used in daily formulas, but any aluminum salt may irritate damaged skin. Do not apply to abrasions or persistent redness.
The name alone should not be used to classify it automatically as ‘weak’ or ‘strong’: the concentration and base are often not disclosed on the front of the package.
